Strengthening Community Based Infant Care through Periodic Assessments in Rajasthan
As part of ongoing efforts to enhance maternal and child health services, Norway India Partnership Initiative (NIPI) team, is supporting state governments in conducting regular Periodic Assessments and mentoring visits across Rajasthan. These visits aim to support both facility and community-level interventions under the Home Based Newborn Care (HBNC) and Home Based Care for Young Children (HBYC) program.
In May 2025, the NIPI and National Health Mission (NHM) teams visited Dausa district, including villages such as Badagaon and several urban wards, to observe ASHA’s work and community-level implementation of HBYC. Using a standardized HBYC assessment tool, the teams evaluated various indicators such as Growth monitoring in the MCP card, Iron and Folic Acid (IFA) syrup administration post six months of age, ORS distribution to all families to manage diarrhoea and complementary feeding initiation practices.
While the overall HBYC coverage now exceeds 65% in most districts, the visit highlighted areas for improvement, particularly in counselling on feeding frequency and quantity.
Following the field visits, a formal feedback meeting was conducted with the Chief Medical & Health Officer (CMHO). The district was requested to share an action taken report addressing key identified gaps. These mentoring and assessment visits continue to play a crucial role in enhancing the quality and efficiency of community-level health programmes in Rajasthan.
